You can park right next to the start of the walk. It involves a fairly steep climb to the lookout, taking 20-30 minutes (and some sore calf muscles). The viewpoint we shot from wasn’t marked or anything, just a rocky outcrop with a killer view over the bay!
best time to visit?
-
We timed our visit for high tide so the inlet was filled with water.
-
Golden hour would be our recommendation, and although we visited at sunset, during the middle of the calendar year, sunrise actually lines up much better!
cj travel tips
-
Check the DOC website (click here) before making the drive out as it can often be closed due to fire risk or farming operations (the walk passes through private farmland).
-
Pack a jacket as it can get cold/windy up the top.
cj photography tips

We found the composition a little tricky as to get more of the water in the frame you really need to go to the edge of the hill, but then there’s no foreground. Play around and work out what you prefer.
-
We shot this as a panorama to capture the wide scene in one frame and empathise the inlet and the ocean meeting.
